Power tools do something to hands that ordinary heavy work does not: vibration damages the nerves and blood vessels directly, and that damage does not fully reverse. Everything else on a building site is a load problem you can manage.
Vibration is a dose problem with a permanent tail.
The specific condition is hand-arm vibration syndrome, and in most countries it is a recognized occupational disease with duties on the employer and a reporting route.
The signs, in the order they appear
- Tingling and numbness in the fingers after using tools, settling within an hour or so. This is the early stage and the one worth acting on
- Fingertips going dead white in the cold, then blue, then red and painful as they warm. Usually starting at one fingertip and spreading over years
- Loss of fine sensation. Dropping small components, struggling with screws and buttons
- Grip strength falling away
The white-finger stage is the one people notice and mention. The tingling stage comes years earlier, and the difference between acting at those two points is substantial.
Vibration damage is measured in hours of exposure, not in years on the job. Two hours a day of a breaker is not the same job as two hours a week.
The rest of the picture
- Night numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers: carpal tunnel syndrome, which vibration and forceful gripping both contribute to
- Numbness in ring and little fingers, and a hollow appearing between thumb and index: cubital tunnel
- Deep pain in the heel of the palm, in anyone who uses the hand as a hammer: hypothenar hammer syndrome, where the artery under the palm is damaged. One of the few hand conditions where the fingertip itself is at risk
- Catching fingers: trigger finger, common in trades with sustained hard grip
- Elbow tendon pain: tennis elbow, and it responds to loading rather than rest
What actually reduces the dose
- Newer, better-maintained tools. Vibration output rises as tools wear, and blunt bits and blades make it worse. Sharp consumables are a vibration control, not a productivity tweak
- Rotate the task. Spreading tool time across a crew, and across a day, is more effective than any glove
- Grip as lightly as the job allows. Tighter grip transmits more vibration into the hand
- Keep hands warm and dry. Cold hands are more vulnerable, and cold is what triggers the attacks once damage exists
- Anti-vibration gloves, with realistic expectations. They help at some frequencies and not others, and a thick glove makes you grip harder. Useful alongside a reduced dose, not instead of one
- Stop smoking if you do. It affects the circulation this condition attacks
The part that is worth a phone call
If you are getting tingling after tool use, report it and get it recorded now rather than once your fingers are turning white. Early-stage vibration injury can stabilize if exposure drops. Later stages do not reverse, and a documented early report protects both your health and any claim you may later have.
Get assessed if:
- Fingers go white in the cold, whatever your age
- Tingling persists between shifts rather than settling
- Numbness has become constant
- You are losing fine dexterity or grip strength
- There is pain in the heel of the palm, or a fingertip that stays cold or discolored

Nerves and arteries do not get tougher with exposure. They only get quieter.
