Scapholunate Injury: The Wrist Sprain That Wasn’t

17 September 20265 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

The scapholunate ligament tears in a fall, the X-ray looks normal, and it gets called a wrist sprain. Untreated it has a known ending: predictable wrist arthritis about a decade later. Six weeks buys a repair, six months a reconstruction, six years a fusion.

Boutonnière Deformity: The Finger That Bends Later

16 September 20265 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

Boutonnière deformity is the central slip tearing off the middle knuckle. On day one the finger looks almost normal, and the deformity develops over the next one to three weeks while it’s being treated as a jam. Here’s the test that catches it before it bends.

Elbow Dislocation Recovery & the Stiff Elbow After

17 September 20265 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

The elbow stiffens faster than any other joint in the body. After a dislocation the X-ray looks fine and everyone relaxes, but weeks in a sling cost range you don’t get back. Bending returns easily; straightening is the year-long project.

Finger Dislocation & PIP Sprain: Why It Stays Swollen

17 September 20265 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

The middle knuckle is the most commonly injured joint in the hand, and the swelling after a sprain or dislocation lasts 6 to 12 months. That’s normal. What isn’t normal, and what ruins these fingers, is resting them still.

Jersey Finger: Fingertip Won’t Bend & the Surgery Window

16 September 20265 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

Jersey finger is the deep flexor tendon ripping off the bone at your fingertip, usually the ring finger, usually grabbing a shirt. The finger still works, which is why people wait. Hold the middle bone and bend the tip: if nothing moves, this is surgical, in days not weeks.

Skier’s Thumb (UCL Injury): Symptoms & Treatment Window

17 September 20265 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

Skier’s thumb is a torn UCL ligament at the thumb knuckle, and a complete tear often cannot heal on its own because tissue slips into the gap. The repair window is weeks. A “sprained thumb” with weak pinch needs assessment this week.

Wrist Sprain: Recovery Time, and When It’s Something Worse

16 September 20265 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

Most wrist sprains settle in 2 to 3 weeks. But “sprain” is the most overused label in the upper limb, worn by scaphoid fractures, TFCC tears and De Quervain’s on day one. Run the 3-location sort before you wait it out.

TFCC Injury: Wrist Pain on the Little-Finger Side

17 September 20264 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

The TFCC is your wrist’s meniscus, and a torn one is the classic missed injury: a “sprain” that still hurts with rotation and pushing at week 3. Most recover without surgery, if the brace-rebuild-reload sequence starts early.

Jammed Finger: Sprain, or Something That Needs a Splint?

17 September 20264 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

Most jammed fingers are minor. But four other injuries wear the same costume on day one, and two get permanently worse if ignored. Run the 4-question self-sort: tip straightens, tip bends, finger looks straight, joint never popped out.

Mallet Finger: Splint Treatment & Recovery Timeline

17 September 20262 September 2026 by Hand Therapist Nigel Chua

A drooping fingertip after a ball strike is a torn tendon, however little it hurts. The fix is a splint worn dead straight for 6 to 8 weeks, and one bend restarts the clock. The cheapest good outcome in hand therapy, bought entirely with discipline.
